New Brunswickers won’t feel the effect of a a price on carbon until January of 2018 when the first phase kicks in.
Former Conservative M-P John Williamson is warning consumers could be in for price shock if a 50 dollar a ton carbon tax is imposed. He says it would be the equivalent of the HST going up from 15 per cent to 20.5 per cent.
Williamson says Ontario already has a carbon tax and its power rates are a mess with talk of energy poverty.
He says the only jurisdiction that has done it right is B-C which for every dollar increase in the tax on carbon, another tax has been cut by the same amount, the basis of which is you tax what you don’t want, carbon and you lower taxes on what you do want such as more jobs.
