A new unit dedicated specifically to prosecuting offenses involving domestic and intimate partner violence has been created by New Brunswick’s Public Prosecution Services.
Issues the unit will deal with include making sure matters to go trial in a timely fashion, that the victim’s safety is of paramount concern, and that empirically-based best practices are used when making recommendations on sentencing.
The unit is already running and the hiring of new staff is underway. Over a three-year period 10 new prosecutors and four new support staff will be added to backfill the assigned staff.
This unit was established after recommendations from an action group that looked at how the Crown deals with allegations of intimate partner violence.
