Basketball fans in the Maritimes have something to look forward to.
The inaugural season of the Eastern Canadian Basketball League is set to begin in March of next year before wrapping up in June.
The league currently has six teams scattered across Atlantic Canada. The include Truro Tide, Valley Vipers, Summerside Slam, Bathurst Bears, Charlottetown Power, and Saint John Union.
The league is expected to announce another franchise name soon, and they have spoken with people in Sydney and Halifax that are interested in starting a team. The league hopes to have teams in both those cities going forward.
“Basketball is very popular in Atlantic Canada and they hope to provide opportunities for Maritimers to play professional basketball. League President Tim Kendrick said. “The teams will also give back to the community in anyway they can by having players visit schools or by volunteering in local kid’s clubs.”
The league will operate as a single ownership group instead of having teams individually owned. People that are interested in having a team in their area are invited to contact the league.
Kendrik really hopes this league will takeoff in the Maritimes and hopes they will be around for many years to come.
