NB Power is looking for a new fuel source to keep the coal-fired Belledune Generating Station in northern New Brunswick up and running as the utility looks to eliminate coal by 2030.
The power utility is looking at other fuel sources to power the station and has invested up to 7-million-dollars to investigate hydrogen fuel sources and is also looking at biomass and natural gas alternatives.
The Irving Oil refinery and the Belledune generating station produce one third of the emissions in New Brunswick. Belledune produces 13-percent of NB Power’s electricity.
The New Brunswick government’s new climate change action plan includes phasing out coal.
