Thousands of Ringette players from across the Maritimes have taken to the ice in Moncton.
They’re taking part in the Dieppe/Riverview Open Ringette tournament.
Coordinator Kevin Simmonds says the tournament kicked off today and will run until Sunday.
“Currently, this is the biggest tournament we have ever had. 111 teams from across three Maritime provinces. They’ll be playing at at least a combined 200 games.”
Ringette is often associated with females, but Simmonds says there are boys who take part as well, “We do have some boys. The boys come to learn at around five years old. They continue to go right straight through. They continue to play other sports but they maintain their Ringette background as well.”
Simmonds says the sport of Ringette continues to grow.
“In the past ten years it has highly picked up. We have created a provincial league, so each province would have their own team. It goes right through to Univerisity now, and high schools are also starting to pick it up.”
