The Fredericton International Airport (YFC) is ready for takeoff with the completion of its terminal expansion.
Although COVID-19 emerged in the middle of construction, the terminal was completed under budget and four months ahead of schedule.
In addition to more natural light, travellers will find new food options, upgraded baggage handling, an improved security area and children’s play area.
The YFC expansion project was a partnership between the Fredericton International Airport Authority, the Province of New Brunswick and the Government of Canada.
Federal minister Dominic LeBlanc said the government will always stand by all airports in New Brunswick.
“Our government believes strongly in the role that airports play in the economic development of every corner of our province. We will always stand by the airport in Fredericton and other New Brunswick airports in ensuring they can continue to welcome tourists, Canadians and people from around the world,” noted LeBlanc.
“As we emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic, it will be more important than ever for our province to showcase what a tremendous place New Brunswick is to live, work, and play. This bright, modern airport will play a key role in our economic recovery,” said Fredericton International Airport Authority President and CEO Johanne Gallant.
Due to COVID-related travel restrictions, Fredericton currently doesn’t have scheduled air service although Air Canada and WestJet are both planning to resume flights in June.
The Fredericton Airport had more than 427,000 travellers in 2019 making it the province’s second busiest after the Greater Moncton Airport.
The previous terminal was only designed to handle about 200,000 passengers per year.
